I was inspired by Surrealism, Cubism, and Automatism. This is a book cover for a comic that doesn't quite exist yet: Drop. It is a series that I have had with me for a long time that features a young vampire who gets caught in a web of debts, drugs, and sex trafficking. It takes place at a drag bar named 'Drop' located in Miami Beach. The main character, Ranson, is covered in a dress of wandering hands as he presents an orchestra of chaos that symbolizes the many themes and threats that come with the story. Henry Clarke's and Aubrey Beardsley's master use of black and white line-work has stuck with me and I wish to continue to push myself to work in black and white. The stage, his life, and his story has been my own personal outlet since I was a teenager.
I was most inspired by Andre Masson and his emphasis on "Free Association" within ones creative work. I found myself stuck with a lack of decisiveness on what or who to draw until I read the Artyfactory's article on Surrealism. Masson channeled his 'unconscious mind' by drawing freely without thought or reason. I decided to give this a shot and found myself finding the inspiration I desperately sought after and, in the end, I really enjoy this piece. Additionally, the title type is my hand written script with lots of inspiration from Fortunato Depero's Futurism movement.
OMG!!!! I would actually LOVE to make something like that. There has to be a website somewhere that we can use to submit work and have a fuzzy color-me-in sent in the mail. Thanks for the great idea!! <333333
WOW Gabi I just love this poster. It’s like super intricate and detailed, and I don’t mean to diminish your inspiration but that’s just sort of a bunch of abstract scribbles on a page, what you have here is much more legible and super cool! Great Job.
HAHAAHA!!!! Well, to clarify, the scribbles are to show ya'll an example of Automatism and Masson's tendency to just let his pencil lead the way. I was super art-blocked until I saw this and gave it a try. I appreciate the love nonetheless <3
I can't stop staring at this the absolute movement and energy this has is phenomenonal! The linework on your design is really intricate and works so well with all the other elements!
I really like your book cover it reminds me of those psychedelic coloring pages with the fuzzy black parts that you color and they glow in the dark
