Decorated Initial

Gabi Lecusay Adobe Illustrator
I chose to draw my inspiration from Islamic Manuscripts for my Decorated Initial assignment with the first letter of my last name: L. I find tiling from Turkey, Persia, and the Mediterranean region to be an absolutely beautiful display of geometry and bold color contrast. My design is significantly more simple than some of the most gorgeous compositions of gridded lines, rhythmic patterns, and organic shapes. I referenced museum photos from the Michael Abbott collection of Southeast Asian Islamic Manuscripts and primarily focused on this particular page display photographed by Emily Keppel. [Article]

  1. Hi Gabi, I really love your take on this assignment. The colors all work really well together, as well as the composition of the piece. I think it was a great choice to not keep the piece inside the square 8x8 minimum requirements. Overall, a very beautifully done piece!!

  3. The Islamic manuscript interpretation is accurately depicted. From the shapes arounds the letter form, to the color choice, the inspiration is spot on. I enjoy how it isn't just in a square, but that it flourishes outward. Beautiful work.
